British ex-prime minister Johnson apparently wants knighthood for his father

According to a media report, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants to knight his father. As the Times reported on Monday, Johnson put the 82-year-old on a list of people he would propose for the knighthood when he resigned in September.

Father Stanley Johnson is one of around 100 people on Boris Johnson's list, according to the report. This would be significantly longer than that of Boris Johnson's predecessors. Theresa May and David Cameron each proposed around 60 personalities for knighthood when they left office.

Neither the British government nor those close to Boris Johnson confirmed the report. He nonetheless fueled allegations of nepotism, which are regularly leveled at the Conservative Tories and Boris Johnson in particular.

The leader of the opposition Labor Party, Keir Starmer, called a possible nomination by Johnson's father "ridiculous". He assumes that the public will consider this "absolutely outrageous," he told LBC radio. The question arises as to what Stanley Johnson did to deserve this award.

Stanley Johnson would be a controversial choice for knighthood. According to The Times, there have been allegations against him of sexually assaulting two women and domestic violence against his former wife, Boris Johnson's mother. Stanley Johnson denied any wrongdoing.

Johnson senior was a former member of the European Parliament and supported Britain's stay in the European Union (EU) in the 2016 Brexit referendum - unlike his son Boris, who led the campaign to leave the EU. Later, Stanley Johnson changed his mind and supported Brexit. He was granted French citizenship last year, which earned him accusations of hypocrisy.

In 2020, Boris Johnson, then Prime Minister, had already appointed his brother Jo to the House of Lords.
