Biden declares solidarity with participants in mass protests in Iran

US President Joe Biden has pledged his solidarity with the participants in the mass protests in Iran. "I want you to know that we stand with the citizens, the courageous women of Iran," Biden told a group of pro-liberty protesters in Iran at a college in Irvine, California on Friday. A movement has awakened in the Islamic Republic which, in his estimation, "will not be calmed for a long, long time".

"Women all over the world are persecuted in different ways, but in God's name they should be allowed to wear what they want to wear," said Biden, referring to the strict veil requirement for women in Iran. The leadership in Tehran must "end violence against its own citizens who are simply exercising their basic rights."

A large Iranian community lives in the city of Irvine, near Los Angeles.

The protests in Iran were triggered by the death of the young Kurd Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died in Tehran on September 16 after being arrested there three days earlier by the vice squad on charges of not wearing her headscarf in accordance with regulations.

According to the Oslo-based organization Iran Human Rights, more than a hundred people have been killed in the demonstrations. According to Amnesty International, at least 23 minors are also among the fatalities.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken received representatives of the Iranian diaspora on Friday. US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke with actress and activist Nazanin Boniadi. Harris praised "the courage of these women" in Iran as an inspiration.

Iranian activists on the Internet called for further nationwide protests against the leadership in Tehran on Saturday. The protests should be under the motto "The beginning of the end". The activists advised demonstrating in places where no security forces are present. The protesters were supposed to shout "Death to the dictator" with a view to the spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
