At breakfast, the full extent of inflation becomes apparent

In the morning you should eat like an emperor, says an old adage, at noon like a king and in the evening like a pauper. This is a popular nutrition guide, but in times of inflation the sentence can also be interpreted differently: In the end, there may not be enough money left over for dinner.

Food has become drastically more expensive in the past twelve months, by an average of around 20 percent. Only energy prices rose more sharply, although they have now fallen significantly again. So far, this has not been the case with food - on the contrary, the upward trend is continuing here.

For many products, the inflation rate is far higher than the average of 20 percent. This is shown by an example breakfast table: those who prefer tea in the morning get the best deal, as the price has only risen by 3.7 percent. Coffee, on the other hand, was up 18 percent, and fruit juice, a favorite for many people to start the day, is showing a similar rate of increase.

Muesli eaters are less affected by inflation (12.5 percent) than those who like to eat a roll in the morning (20.8 percent). If this is to be proven, then vegetarians are worse off: cheese has risen by more than 46 percent, cold cuts by only 15.6 percent.

Breakfast has also become more expensive for those who like it sweet: honey (up 22.5 percent) and jam (up 25 percent) are showing well above-average price increases.

With two behavioral changes, breakfast can at least be made a little cheaper: Firstly, by having the butter removed from the bread roll, because with a rate of increase of almost 40 percent, spreadable fat is particularly important in terms of price. The latest price cuts by discounters promise at least some relief here.

This applies to an even greater extent to sugar, which some people use to sweeten their coffee – the price of this has even increased by more than 60 percent within a year. So you can save here too. However, the absolute price for a teaspoon of sugar is of course still so low that those with a sweet tooth should weigh up the benefits of such a renunciation.

Despite the sometimes drastic price increases for food, Germany is still in the middle of the range in a European comparison of cost levels, as inflation hit the entire continent.

It is only significantly cheaper in a few Eastern European countries, while groceries are significantly more expensive in Norway and Switzerland - the Swiss, for example, pay more than 50 percent more on average.

In one respect, however, the Germans in Europe stand out: They spend less on food than almost any other country. On average, Germans don’t even spend ten percent of their money on food and non-alcoholic beverages – the proportion is even lower only in Ireland and Luxembourg. Germans even spend more money on leisure, entertainment and culture than on food.

The French, Italians and Spaniards, on the other hand, spend around half more on enjoyment at their home table. On the other hand, the proportion of spending on cars in this country is larger than anywhere else, a third higher than in Italy and even twice as high as in France or Spain. The question of what increases the quality of life is decided differently by everyone.
