Armed strangers attack vigil in front of Iranian embassy

Unknown persons attacked a caravan in front of the Iranian embassy in Berlin, which is used as a vigil. A police spokesman said three men were injured in the clash on Sunday night. Two of them were treated in hospital. The investigations are now being carried out by the state police of the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) because there may be a political background.

Hundreds of people had previously shown solidarity with the protests in Iran at a demonstration in the city. On the Straße des 17. Juni they formed a human chain between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate from early Saturday afternoon.

On posters, the demonstrators demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners in Iran or "Down with the Islamic Republic". Posters with photos of Mahsa Amini could be seen again and again. The death of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurd in mid-September is seen as the trigger for the mass protests in Iran against the authoritarian course of the government that have been going on for weeks. Amini was arrested by the vice squad for allegedly not complying with the rules for wearing a headscarf. She died in police custody on September 16.

The New National Gallery in Berlin also sent a sign of solidarity and installed a large banner. It features the 1993 self-portrait Unveiling by Iranian artist and filmmaker Shirin Neshat.

On the night of Sunday, the vigil in front of the Iranian embassy was attacked. Posters with the inscriptions “Iranians want democracy” and “Women Life Freedom” hung on the caravan on Sunday. The police reported on the attack and their previous investigations on Sunday afternoon.

An employee of the central object protection is said to have seen at around 1:15 a.m. how three men ripped banners and flags from the caravan. They are said to have covered their faces with towels. The employee alerted the officers of the responsible police section and asked the men to stop. The suspects are said to have tried to open the door of the trailer, the police said.

A verbal argument and a scuffle is said to have developed with four men who were in the trailer. The suspects are said to have run away, with the other men following them. "The four occupants of the trailer are said to have been attacked by the suspects."

According to the police spokesman, three of the four men from the trailer suffered injuries. A 37-year-old is said to have been hit in the back with a wooden stick, and he is said to have been kicked. A 63-year-old is said to have been injured in the toe with a sharp object – probably a knife. The two were treated in the hospital, said the police spokesman. A 55-year-old suffered a graze.

The fourth man - a 34-year-old - was unharmed after initial investigations, said the police spokesman. The suspects are said to have fled in a car. The 34-year-old reported being threatened with a gun from the vehicle. Emergency services were still looking for perpetrators on site, but found no more suspects. Ads were taken.
