After the twelfth vote, there is movement in the election debacle

In the twelfth vote to elect a chairman in the US House of Representatives, a possible turnaround for the previously hapless Republican Kevin McCarthy has become apparent. 14 MPs from his own party who had previously voted against him voted for him on Friday. The 57-year-old did not get the necessary majority. However, there were indications that McCarthy could possibly become chairman soon.

He had previously failed in eleven ballots because right-wing rebels refused to support him. But his persistence may have paid off. It was the first time in the four-day vote that some of his opponents gave up their resistance.

"We're going to make progress, we're going to shock you," McCarthy had said before the session began. He had previously negotiated behind the scenes with the rebels and apparently made new, far-reaching concessions. The Republican had already met the radical deputies several times.

Republicans have a slim majority in the chamber. As a result, McCarthy would need almost all the votes of his party colleagues to be elected to the powerful post, which is third in the national hierarchy after the president and vice president.

The radical party rebels, many of whom are ardent supporters of former President Donald Trump, are demanding, among other things, that internal rules of procedure in Congress be changed. With this adjustment, their power in Parliament would be strengthened.
