A quick visit to Latin America's model boy

The entrance to the port of Montevideo must have seemed familiar to Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher. The area is reminiscent of a smaller version of the Port of Hamburg, operated by the National Port Authority ANP, with a container terminal with a million TEU per year. The operator of the Katoen Natie container terminal is planning to double the size of the area by 2025, and the port access is to be deepened to 14 meters.

For Tschentscher it will remain a lightning visit, the delegation only stays a few hours in Uruguay and flies to Chile on Tuesday evening, another country with great potential in the energy sector. The Hamburg entourage has been traveling through South America for a week since last Sunday, with stops in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.

Uruguay is considered a model country in terms of energy supply, which, admittedly a small country, manages to cover its entire energy requirements with renewable energies. In addition, the political situation is relatively stable; a centre-right coalition of five parties has governed since March 2020 – good for long-term investments.

In Montevideo, Tschentscher meets the Uruguayan Minister for Industry, Energy and Mines, Omar Paganini, to discuss energy issues and digitization. In both areas, Uruguay is one of the international pioneers. During the course of the day, Hafen Hamburg Marketing e. V. and the Port Authority of Uruguay renew their memorandum of understanding.

It is the third cooperation agreement since 2005. The ports of Hamburg and Uruguay want to intensify their cooperation in the future, including in the areas of environmental protection and emission reduction as well as the development of an infrastructure for import and export
