Westbam appears in a casual Outfit for a walk. He is wearing a Jogging pants and a baseball cap, the Latter is, of course, his trademark. Maybe his Look can also be used as a Hip-Hop Style, suggest, suitable to his new, at the end of February from their upcoming Album with the title "the Risky Sets", on the tens of sizes of the American rap scene as guests are represented.
The agreed meeting point with him is the Kollwitz Platz in Prenzlauer Berg. He points to a house right on the square. "The top floor of my apartment," he says. For well over a year, he is there, but only rarely. Because he now lives in Mallorca. In the East of the island, he has bought a Finca. Far away from the party tourism, he emphasized. On the ball man, he had not been in his life.
He fumbles his phone out of his pocket and shows a few pictures of his new home. Lot of beautiful sunsets in front of the picturesque beach scenes are recognisable. The DJ and techno producer, who has influenced three decades, the party culture of Berlin, now lives in a postcard – so not at all like the old home. His two in Berlin, grown up sons, who would one 15, the other 17 years old, the rest hate there, of course.
Maximilian Lenz, was introduced in 1984 to Berlin
Westbam walked in the direction of the Helmholtz space. At the first traffic light, he goes a Red light on the road. "I want to go Red," he says, and quotes a line of text from the oblique Hit "Because the front is a traffic light" of The Plan, which are considered to be pioneer of the New German wave. Then he adds: "You must strive to be a bad role model."
He constantly says such sentences, in which one never knows whether he means this seriously or ironically. He talks non-stop. So as he has to entertain as a DJ for a party crowd, so he is trying to do in normal conversation, not to do everything possible to get bored.
Westbam, who is really Maximilian Lenz in Münster was born, came in 1984 to Berlin. At the time the wall was still up. At the beginning of the Eighties, he is still Punk, but soon discovered the enthusiasm for working at the mixing console and put in "Metropol" in schöneberg, at that time, one of the hottest Nightclubs in the whole of West Germany. He himself lived in the time in Schöneberg, Charlottenburg. After the turn of the night life in the East of the reunified Berlin, and the "Metropolitan" had to close moved. Also Westbam-oriented, then at some point in the direction of the East. Prior to his relocation to the Balearic Islands, he lived for 15 years on Kollwitz Platz.
He points to the Kollberg 35, right on the square, a pub with a gastro operation. "That was a long time, my favorite neighborhood pub," he says. "Now that is a Ü-40-Disse." Whether to be found in the more Swabians than elsewhere in the city – after all, it is located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg – he could not say. Michi Beck of the Fantastic Four, a Stuttgart, live in the vicinity, "but otherwise, I know of more Spaniards and Mexicans than Swabia".
From the monotonous roar was music to the Charts
He would often asked whether he was looking for in Mallorca, his retirement home, he says. The answer is: no. The proof is his new Album and also as a DJ he was, after all, still to the most of the week in the year. On his secluded Finca, he could also be just as creative as in the big city. "You need as a DJ and producer load no plate is more around the corner, and not a Studio," he says. His new Album was completely created on the Laptop. On Mallorca and on the many flights to his DJ Gigs.
It feels like Westbam Berlin was outgrown. He has made Techno here in the eighties and nineties. Also thanks to him, became monotonous droning music for the Charts. He has written tens of Loveparade-the anthems and with the Mayday Rave as a mass event virtually invented. He has earned with Techno a lot of money, so much that you accused him of selling out of an entire genre of music.
Now he is 53 years old and wants to be a main cast member, more in the Techno-Berlin. "Who wants to be with more than 50 still part of a scene," he says, "is that anyway to help."
New Songs with Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Tyler The Creator
He is now in the "noughties years, yet the scene was": on the Helmholtz square. However, the can no longer afford the higher Rents here in a long time. Cafes and Restaurants now characterize the area. And Westbams favorite Japanese place is around the corner. "In Mallorca, you can eat the super fish," he says, "but the Japanese food I miss there." The Store is, unfortunately, like he had eaten a sea urchin sushi.
A Foodie, he, Westbam says about itself. And one of those who make his food phone photos and Instagram upload. He photographed much anyway, and all the time, even now. To give away about shoes on a window sill. To the first two Tracks released from his new Album, it video clips, both designed as a jerky image collages. He himself had produced, he says, just your own phone selected recordings and it's done.
Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Tyler The Creator – all have taken for Westbam on the new record Songs. "I think these rappers for the great poets of our time," he says. To connect the music with his, so he's in his Album: "not to Bring together something that actually fit to each other, the result is always the best things."More about
