In the debate about the involvement of the Chinese Huawei group on the design of the 5G mobile network in Germany, the United States is threatening the government with consequences for intelligence cooperation. The Embassy was responding to a report of the "Wall Street Journal" on Monday. According to the report, the U.S. Ambassador in Germany, Richard Grenell had written, on Friday sent a letter to Federal Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) and with a termination of the existing intelligence cooperation threatened.
danger for confidentiality
"Secure communications systems" are "essential" for the cooperation in the fields of defence and intelligence services, wrote Grenell. Companies such as Huawei could threaten the "confidentiality of this exchange".
The spokesman for the U.S. Embassy confirmed the report in principle. He said: "If there is in the network of an ally, the unreliable supplier, it could raise questions as to the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive communication, both within this country and between this country and its allies."
