UN adopts Resolution against sexual harassment

The UN General Assembly adopted on Monday a Resolution on the fight against sexual harassment and violence against women.

The U.S. had previously attempted, in vain, the legally non-binding Resolution to weaken and to delete, in particular, formulations of the family planning and safe abortion. Also a Passage to the right of self-determination of women over their sexuality and wished to remove the US government.

In one of Washington requested the vote of 130 States voted in then, but to leave the resolution unchanged. The only no vote came from the United States, 31 States abstained. The Resolution was then adopted without a formal vote.

references to "#MeToo"-movement

The Resolution, which was initiated by France and the Netherlands, is the first to contain direct references to the fight against sexual harassment. It thus represents a direct response to the "#MeToo"-movement against the harassment and discrimination of women.

In November, had already rejected in the Committee responsible for the Amendments of the U.S. government. A US diplomat had justified the Amendments, among other things, that the "abortion as a method of family planning" of the USA will not be accepted.

she struggled in vain, however, that, in the draft resolution, the sexual harassment as "violence" is defined. According to the US law, only the physical violence had to be understood by "force" application, said the diplomat.

Amendments of the United States

The of the United States Amendments tabled in November with the votes of European countries and Israel rejected. Israel and the USA are normally in the UN-voting on a line. The back cover had to get the United States, however, including China, India, Russia, several Muslim countries and the Vatican.

According to UN diplomats, the US government, abortion opponents were behind the effort as Vice-President Mike Pence. Last year, the Trump government had slashed its funding for the UN population Fund in the areas of reproductive medicine and birth control. (nag/sda)
