Thieves steal old painting from church Zele, possibly from the hand of Michelangelo
Zele Sint-Ludgeruskerk has Friday morning burglars on the floor. She names the painting ‘Holy Family' - 145 to 99 inches - from the sixteenth century. Possible is a work by the hand of Michelangelo or one of his pupils. “I hope it quickly recovered and is back in our church that can be suspended. Who the painter is, it is a heavy loss for the church," says pastor Jan Van Raemdonck.

Priest and historian Jan Van Raemdonck zit with the hands in the hair. Friday morning his thieves on the get started with a painting of a whopping 100 kilograms. The work was on an easel display in the church, and had a lot of attention. ‘The Madonna El Silencio' as the work would be called, shows Joseph and Mary, along with a sleeping Jesus and John The Baptist in the background. “The work was 15 years long in the back in the church hidden, when I discovered it, I placed it more to the front, and I got a tip from one of the Zeelse choir, that the work may be, however, what had value," says Van Raemdonck.

Pastor Of Raemdonck is himself a historian and is writing a book about the painting. “It is a painting that looks like a drawing from the Portland collection of the Duke at Portland in England. A pupil of Michelangelo, has had seven copies made. But our painting is larger and much better finished.”
