Bangladeshi authorities blocked access to 58 news sites for more than twelve hours on Monday. The ministry of information referred to that the sites were not registered and that their content should therefore be controlled.

– It is our responsibility as a ministry to bring all the news sites in a system so they can function smoothly, " says Abdul Malek, officer of the ministry of information.

Hundreds of sites in Bangladesh are examined in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections at the end of december. The government has received criticism for the introduction of new laws, as many journalists fear will lead to restrictions of the freedom of the press.
