New official wine region in Austria

the Wachau is now the 15 official DAC in Austria. The area which is adjacent to the Kremstal and Kamptal is located to the northwest of Vienna and is already among the most recognized areas in Austria. The Wachau has, however, since the 1980s had their own classification in which the wines were divided into Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd wines depending on typically the sugars in the grapes and thus the alcohol content in the wines. These will continue, but also the traditional DAC structure with Gebietswein (regional wine), Ortswein (landsbyvin) and Riedenwein (enkeltmarksvine) will be implemented. The Wachau has also committed itself to harvest all the grapes in your hand at all three levels.

"With the Wachau, we can now welcome an important member of the Austrian DAC-family", said Chris Yorke, managing director of the austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB). "By including the Wachau has Austria's wine industry took another step on the road to the fishbowl market themselves solely by means of the regions," he continued, and added: "This has been shown to be effective in the seventeen years now, and has also been recognized internationally."

In Gebietswein-category retained the traditional array of grape varieties, where the seventeen white and red varieties, ranging from Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot Noir and Sankt Laurent are allowed. Gemischter Satz (blends of grapes from the same mark is also permitted. These wines must be provided with the name of the region combined with "DAC" on the label. The grapes can come from anywhere in the entire Wachau.

the Ortswein is of increasing importance in Austria and Wachau also provides the opportunity to use this name in the 22 designated municipalities. The number of approved grape varieties are concentrated here for nine: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay, Neuburger, Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer. These must is vinified as enkeltdrue wines.

the top level is The Riedenwein. The most famous grape varieties in the Wachau Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are allowed here, harvested from the 157 defined enkeltmarker.
