Nathan Shachar: Salvinis visit in the Israel river up political storm

Behind the visit is prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who in recent years have associated the cordial ties to a number of political leaders and movements that previously were considered taboo in Israel. Salvinis critics in Italy and Israel chastise him for his denial – that nyfascist. But Netanyahu chooses to draw attention to other characteristics of the Salvini: his support for Trump, his criticism of the EUROPEAN union, his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and – in the Netanyahu followed – his reorientation towards the central european nationaliströrelser.

Netanyahu increasingly intimate relations with the baltic states and to Poland, the Czech republic, Slovakia and Hungary Brussels-hostile regimes has been a profit. For many israelis is the Netanyahu shift in the embarrassing and shameful. But many of his voters are in the mood. Rather than languish in vain to be accepted as a full member in the western democracies exclusive club, so to create Israel, a new ideological environment, where new and less scrupulous allies will accept it without the constant censure of the occupation and the requirements of the peace process.
