Missy Franklin finishes the swim at the age of 23

”I am not prepared to be in pain every day,” writes Franklin in an open letter to ESPN.

Franklin has taken five OLYMPIC gold medals – four 17-year-old in London in 2012 and further in Rio 2016. Furthermore, it has been eleven world CHAMPIONSHIP gold medals during his career.

”It took a long time to say the words 'I quit'. A long, long time. But now I'm ready,” she writes.

”Swimming has been, and will always be, a big part of my life. I plan on definitely continuing to be involved in what I think is the world's best sport, just in a different way.”
