Chairman of the Danish sports confederation (DIF) Niels Nygaard has been interim president of The European Olympic Committee (EOC).
The Danish idrætspolitiker was already vice-president of the organization, but he is moved a step up, according to slovenian president Janez Kocijancic died earlier in the week, after a short illness. It writes Politiken.
- It is indeed a very sad background.
- It has always been my plan to continue as vice president. And if it could be done; to go after the presidency, says Niels Nygaard to the newspaper.
The 67-year-old DIF-the president has been on the board in the EOC over the past seven years. In the four years it has been in the role as vice president.
He will now be given 18 months as a temporary at the most powerful post in the EOC until the next presidential election. Here he had already decided to put themselves in the candidate list.
In 2021 stops Niels Nygaard as president of the DIF. For the time he will have been sitting on the chair in 14 years.
