Cars the fault in each of the five security alert in the EU

When the EU-member states encounter products that pose a danger to citizens, they rush out to warn other countries about the product.

Last year, it happened no less than 2257 times - and in 19 percent of the cases, almost every fifth time, due to the danger of a vehicle. It shows a new inventory for the year 2018, which the EU commission has published.

Among the more serious car-the warnings from the last years is far from unsafe airbags that can shoot metal fragments out of the face of the driver, to flammable the USB connector or wheels, liable to fall of while driving.

The european early-warning system for product safety is set in the time of the UNION, bears the name of Safety Gate and has been in operation since 2003.

When an EU country detects a hazard of a product, it gets reported to the Safety Gate system, which then sends the warning to the rest of the member states. Any follow-up warnings are also recorded, so that there is transparency in the whole process.

Safety Gate is an important tool to protect european citizens against dangerous products, and it works, says Vera Jourová, commissioner for justice, consumers and gender equality, in a press release.

She adds:

- With more than 2000 alerts, and almost twice as many recalls and withdrawals from the market, the report shows that the rules are enforced in an effective manner. We will therefore continue the collaboration with national authorities and third countries to protect all european consumers.
