49-year-old falls unconscious in police custody and later dies

A woman from Hamburg-Neuallermöhe who became unconscious in police custody died in a hospital on Tuesday. The 49-year-old was in a mental state of emergency near her home on the evening of February 5 and was taken into custody by officers, the police said on Tuesday. The officials wanted to introduce the woman to a medical officer because of an assumed danger to herself, it said.

At the station in Hamburg-Bergedorf, she initially behaved inconspicuously, but then showed behavioral problems again. Without external influence, she fell to the ground, whereupon the emergency services rushed over. The woman put up considerable resistance to this. Suddenly she became unconscious and showed no signs of life. An ambulance took her to the hospital, where she died on Tuesday.

"We deeply regret the death and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family. We will make our contribution to the full clarification of the facts," said police spokeswoman Sandra Levgrün. The Department of Internal Investigations of the Interior Authority had already started investigations on suspicion of physical harm in the office last week.

In the meantime, a body was found on an embankment at Hamburg's Spreehafen on Tuesday. It was probably a woman, said a fire department spokesman. The site was found on the Berliner Ufer in the Kleiner Grasbrook district. The dead had been taken to the institute for forensic medicine.
