31 arrests during the demo weekend in Berlin

According to the police, 31 people were arrested during several demonstrations over the weekend in downtown Berlin. There were 25 criminal investigations, including on suspicion of robbery, assault, dangerous bodily harm, insult and after showing the Hitler salute, as the Berlin police took stock on Sunday. Almost 1,900 police officers were deployed, including emergency services from Bavaria, Brandenburg, Bremen, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein.

First and foremost among the demonstrations was that of the AfD under the motto "Energy security and protection against inflation - our country first!", which started in the early afternoon on Republic Square in front of the Reichstag building. The up to 10,000 participants then moved through Berlin-Mitte and then reached the starting point again. According to the police, eleven counter-events with a total of around 1400 participants took place at the same time.

According to the police, participants in two counter-rallies in the Spreebogenpark and on Heinrich-von-Gagern-Strasse tried to get through the emergency services' barriers several times in order to disrupt the AfD rally on Republic Square. During the AfD demonstration, counter-demonstrators tried to block their path. According to the police, the emergency services managed to prevent this.

On Pariser Platz, there were later clashes between participants in the AfD event and others who had protested against it. On Leipziger Platz, the police arrested an 18-year-old woman who had shown the Hitler salute. She was released after her identity was established, but she faces charges of using signs belonging to unconstitutional organizations.
