Children from sly mothers live longer, but not happier

A higher-level of education of mothers brought their children to live a longer life. This was the result of a study by the German Institute for economic research (DIW) in Berlin. A positive impact on mental health could not demonstrate to researchers in a second study, however, in the past.

The assumption that the health of adults depends on not only the wallet, but also with the level of education of their parents, there is a long time.

In a new study with data of around 6000 people from the German Socio-economic Panel (SOEP) found the DIW researchers, this connection again.

Healthier lifestyle

Had a mother from the 1940s, at least a secondary school diploma - roughly equivalent to the lower secondary level - have their adult children over the age of 65 years, on average, two years higher life expectancy than children whose mothers had at most a primary school degree.

This result remained even when the researchers took into account the education of the children and their income. A main reason for the connection, the researchers argue that better educated mothers make sure a healthier way of life for their children, for example, with a view to a balanced diet, Smoking behavior, alcohol consumption and exercise.

Educated mothers don't make you happy

Rather surprisingly, the team was a second researcher, the result of their study: After the formation of the mothers has to date no measurable impact on the mental health of their now adult children.

Used for this study were data of about 3300 mother-child pairs from the 1950s in West Germany. The children were on average 30 years old when their mental health was examined. To the amazement of the scientists is no relation between mental health and life satisfaction of children and the education level of the mother was found in the data.

mothers with higher levels of education take better-paying Jobs, and lead through more financial independence often happier partnerships. This should have no impact on the Psyche of the children positively. (Dec/sda)
